My name is Hamayun Akbar. I am a husband and father of three young children, two daughters and one boy. I come from a working-class family who knows what it takes to raise their families and provide quality education, recreational facilities and basic day to day needs in the difficult time after declining oil prices lead to the shrinking economy of the City of Calgary and pandemic crisis causing a lot of mental and financial stress for the Calgarians.

In 2009, shortly after I completed my education at the University of West London.I was very excited to start a career but the global financial crisis, which took place in 2009, made it very difficult to get a good job. However, because of my computer science background, I got a job as an IT consultant. I have worked with different multinational companies. Since then, I have gained a lot of knowledge and expertise regarding financial planning and controlling, based solely on facts based performance rather than hypothetical assumptions.

During my college and university years, I have been actively involved in student politics and have worked with student unions on various issues, including student accommodation, tuition fees, and other issues. I have also taken part in student discussion groups and have addressed student issues to relevant authorities at their forums and in correspondence. As a student leader, I was always passionate about being able to solve problems faced by students. In addition, I have done a lot of work with several non-profit organizations that aim to help and promote the welfare of humans.

Vision

In my opinion, Calgary city councillor’s primary duty is to work with city managers on every step, from developments stages to executions stages and keep people of his ward informed about it through face-to-face meeting and via all available forums and seriously take their ideas and views and to formulate a strategy for development and implementation of by laws which are most of time not been consulted enough at development stages.

In my view, Calgary’s city Council has a responsibility and obligation to continually improve how the city awards contracts to private companies for services and how the city conducts procurement processes for various departments.

My goal is to be a prudent steward of how the city spends tax dollars; I will ensure that the use of tax dollars is transparent and clear. In these difficult times, it is absolutely essential that we spend wisely while keeping basic services for the City of Calgary. I am a strong advocate for workplace efficiency and cost-saving measures.

I will do my best on behalf of the people of Ward 3 to make our city a great living place. During my term as councillor, I will speak for Ward 3 to ensure that resources are maximized for them. I believe that if you want to serve people effectively, you should listen first, ask them for their suggestions, consider them, and then discuss them.

Also, I propose a professional development day at school on election day to ensure student and staff safety. It is challenging for teachers and staff members to manage large groups of people on election day.

Hamayun’s Top Priorities As Councillor

Affordable Housing

In recent years, the house price increase has put a strain and pressure on parents and young families trying to get on the housing ladder. Considering the limited savings of working-class families, it is almost impossible for them to help their children save for a down payment if they want to buy a house.

Green Line & Public Transit

I am in favour of the Green Line Transportation Project. I believe that Ward 3 should be included in the first phase of this project because the public transportation arrangements linking Ward 3 communities to downtown Calgary and other parts of Calgary cannot meet its needs. There is a need for senior citizens and people with low incomes to have access to the services and amenities they need.

Violence & Crime

I firmly believe that the City of Calgary should allocate more resources to reduce violence and fight against criminal elements through strong bylaws, legal enforcement, and police funding.

Fluoride Water

There are several health benefits of fluoridated water. Several scientific studies, including those conducted by the O’Brien Institute of Public Health at the University of Calgary, have independently examined the effects of water fluoridation on community health.

Economy, Job & Training

Training in new jobs skills will benefit our City as there is an increasing demand for a workforce with the right skills.
